Directed by Niclas Gillis, the Native Son Fall / Winter 2012 fashion film chronicles the journey of a man in search of home, tearing through the wilderness until death, upon which he reaches the shores of that which lies beyond. An allegorical tale, the journey is supposed to symbolize man’s eternal pursuit for meaning. The man eventually discovers it upon the realization that outward pursuit will lead him only deeper into the maze. Instead, he finds that ultimate wisdom can only be derived from within, symbolized by the replacement of God for a mere mirror.
The film is inspired by the writings of 18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant, who writes that the motto of enlightenment is, “Sapere Aude”, or, “Dare to be wise”.
