Suit Alterations: Questions to Ask Before You Buy
An alteration quote should be part of the buying decision. A discounted suit can become expensive if it needs extensive work, and some changes cannot deliver the result you expect.
Take the whole outfit
Bring your intended shirt and shoes. Explain when and how you will wear the suit. Ask the tailor to assess the jacket and trousers together rather than requesting a list of changes based on photographs alone.
Ask what the garment allows
Available seam allowance determines how much fabric can be let out. Sleeve details, pockets, lining and jacket construction affect the difficulty of other changes. The label size does not reveal these limitations; the tailor needs to examine the garment.
Agree on priorities
Separate changes needed for comfort from preferences about silhouette. Ask which adjustments will make the biggest difference and which carry a risk of disrupting proportions. If the proposed work is extensive, compare another size or cut before committing.
