Suit Trousers: Waist, Seat and Trouser Break
Evaluate suit trousers with the shoes you intend to wear. Their waist position, leg shape and hem length affect each other, so choose the general fit before deciding how much fabric should rest on the shoe.
Waist and seat first
The waistband should stay where you intend it to sit without relying on an excessively tightened belt. Walk and sit. Check for uncomfortable pressure and persistent pulling across the seat or thighs. A slim silhouette still needs enough room for ordinary movement.
Understand break
Break is the fold created where the trouser hem meets the shoe. Little or no break produces a cleaner, shorter line; more break leaves a longer hem with a visible fold. Neither is a universal requirement. The trouser width, shoe shape and intended formality influence the result.
Hem with the right shoes
A fitting in trainers can give a misleading impression if the suit will be worn with dress shoes. Bring the actual pair and stand naturally while the hem is pinned. Check both legs and look from behind as well as from the front.
Check before finalising
Ask whether the proposed change leaves room for future adjustment. Confirm how the hem will be finished and whether the fabric and construction permit your preferred result. Take a few steps after pinning; a pleasing still photograph is only part of the decision.
